The Invisible Trade

Leadership in the Trenches

Nobody serves an apprenticeship in leading.

Every other skill in your building came with training. This one didn't. Fewer than half the people running teams in this country were ever trained to do it.

Your best welder became the foreman.

Your best nurse became the charge nurse. Your best teller became the branch manager. That's how it works almost everywhere — promote the best producer, hand them a team, and hope.

But leading is a second trade, with its own skills and its own cost when it goes untrained. You already see that cost where you already look: overtime, turnover, rework, and the fact that nothing runs right when you're not there.

The program

Four sessions. On your site. On your schedule.

A cohort program for sitting supervisors, foremen, leads, and managers — the people already carrying the job. Not theory. Not personality tests. Live practice in the specific conversations and decisions the job is actually made of.

Session 01

Before, During, After

Every disruption has a before, a during, and an after — and each one asks something different of a leader. Your leads find out, on paper, where all their time actually goes. Then they learn what to do about it.

Session 02

Making the Work Clear

The most proven finding in workplace psychology: specific beats “do your best” — every time it's been tested. Your leads write down what good looks like for every person they lead, and learn how to get real commitment instead of a nod.

Session 03

What Your Team Runs On

A team's ability to take a hit runs on resources — people, skills, backups, energy — and on whether the team believes it can handle the next one. Your leads map both, find the single points of failure, and learn the check-in that keeps people from quitting quietly.

Session 04

Getting Better On Purpose

Teams that learn fast from wins and losses outrun teams that just survive them. Your leads practice the five-minute debrief, then lead the group through something nobody's been trained for — because that's the job now.

  • 4 sessions × 4 hours · weekly or biweekly
  • Cohorts of 3–8
  • Delivered at your facility — weekend mornings, pre-shift, between shifts, or business hours
  • 2 hours of individual follow-up coaching per participant
  • 18 documented contact hours

Paper you can hold. Change you can see.

This program produces artifacts, not vibes. When it's done, your organization holds:

  • Written performance standards for every person on every participating lead's team — a map of what “good” means in your operation, most likely for the first time
  • Team resource maps showing every single point of failure in your operation, on one page each
  • Three-phase plans, debrief records, and signed commitments — made out loud, in front of you
  • A certificate for every participant documenting 18 contact hours and eight named competencies, plus a one-page insert formatted for your existing training records

For organizations carrying AS9100, ISO 9001, SQF, or accreditation requirements: documented leadership training with named competencies, hours, dates, and instructor qualifications — ready for your training matrix.

The research

Built on research. Delivered by somebody who's done the job.

Devon A. Morris, Ph.D., has spent over two decades leading transformation inside organizations in finance, healthcare, energy, aviation, and government — and training the people who run their teams. He is an industrial-organizational psychology researcher and Board Certified Coach. His research focuses on teams: what makes them resilient, what keeps them committed to the goal, how they learn, and how they adapt and perform when conditions get hard.

This program isn't repackaged common sense. It's built directly on that research — including a study of 291 working professionals that examined exactly what separates teams that adapt under pressure from teams that break. The findings, in plain language:

Teams whose leaders coach them — before, during, and after hard events — dramatically outperform teams whose leaders just react. The model explained almost 74% of the difference.

The single biggest lever a leader controls is clarity and commitment: teams that know exactly what good looks like, and said out loud they'd deliver it, adapt better under pressure.

The finding that matters most if you're skeptical: the teams that need this most gain the most from it. Coaching moved the needle hardest on teams that were struggling — not the ones already humming.

What this program is not: HR, employment law, discipline procedures, hiring, or conflict mediation. We teach your leads to lead the work. Anything touching somebody's job status goes to your HR or counsel — we say that out loud in the room, and we put it in writing.

We won't promise you a percentage.

Anyone who does is selling. What we will do: baseline your real numbers before we start — turnover, 90-day departures, overtime, absences — and pull them again with you at 90 and 180 days. You'll see exactly what moved. That's the deal.

Start with a conversation.

No pitch deck, no pressure. Tell us what your floor, unit, or branch is dealing with, and we'll tell you straight whether this program fits — and if it doesn't, what might.
